From Academia to Society: Between Institutions and the Press

This article focuses on the importance that Luigi Einaudi attributes to scientific, cultural, academic institutions, and to the press, understood as a vector of development and modernization of Italian society at the beginning of the century. In particular, for the economist, scientific research, statistical surveys, the training of economists and technicians contribute to the development of national economic policies. It is a complex program that Einaudi attempts to develop with the aim of training a competent and adequate ruling class to provide solutions to an industrial society in continuous evolution and to enhance the knowledge of economic facts, as a factor of freedom and decision for citizens. Einaudi’s participation in public life has always been characterized by seriousness and concreteness. The principles of competence and rigour are the distinctive feature of his existence as an intellectual and politician, in the various roles of teacher, cultural organizer and commentator in the columns of the main daily and periodical newspapers.
